| The popular myth: When the former owners of what is now WBRD (AM) were given an FM construction permit, they weren't too thrilled. This was back in the days when
FM was very much a "secondary" or "experimental" service. It seems, they got the calls WBRD-FM by default. Later though, they reconsidered and wanted something new for the FM station.
But there was disagreement as to what call letters they should get and the paperwork was never filled out by the owners. So, as the tale goes, a secretary seized the opportunity
to fill out the paperwork, and applied for new calls with her initials: D.U.V. If this is true, it would mean "The Dove" moniker
was adopted to match a rather bizarre-looking set of calls! Now the real story from Robert Nelson: The WDUV call letters were filed for in
1973 by Sunshine State Broadcasting Co. Inc. with the help of our Washington atty's office. I was VP & GM of WBRD and WDUV for
more than 30 years. The call letters were a result of a brain storm meeting in the one and only production room. It was
myself and PD Bob Keehn and his wife Donna Valentine who just happened to be the Sales Manager with a real flair for marketing.
Yes we were a mom & pop operation...no I did not come up with WDUV, nor did Bob, it was his wife! I did approve of
it but only after an hour of pros and cons with regards to the war in Vietnam. You heard the term "hawks & doves." That was
the only sticking point. |

was okay...we were going to call it Q-104 anyhow. I reminded them that 104.7 actually looked more like 105, so
we called it Q-105." If you're wondering what the "Q" stands for, Ralph adds: "The 'Q' radio format from KCBQ, San Diego." |
